This design is part of my 2009 flag proposal series (the flag designs from my old site with the most hits and ratings). Ever since I posted this design in 2009, I got some feedback and I’ve made an even better design for Utah which you can view here.

The current design

The current flag scored a 3.47/10.00 in NAVA’s North American flag survey, which makes it the fifteenth worst flag in North America. In 2019, the Utah House voted to solicit potential flag designs to replace the current flag.

My proposal

First off, this design is simple enough to be remembered by a child, yet distinctive enough to be identified at a distance.

This design incorporates features of the current flag, the Mormon pioneer flag and the national flag. The overall layout and thirteen stripes are from the national flag. The colours are from the Mormon pioneer flag and the current flag of Utah. The golden circle is also retained from the current flag of Utah. This aids recognition, establishes continuity and suggests connections with Utah’s history and Mormon influence.

In the canton (top-left corner), the circle represents unity, the star represents the sun and the hexagon represents a beehive. The sun has twelve points, which is the number of perfection. The beehive is the official symbol of Utah and represents hard work, progress and community. The conjunction of the beehive cell inside the sun’s rays sends two messages: firstly that each individual has a chance to shine, and secondly that Utah’s positive influence is known well outside its borders.

The location of this emblem ensures its importance. When a flag wears out, the left hand side will be the last to remain. When it is not flying, that corner will be most visible part of the flag. When it is flying, the eye will be naturally attracted to that region as a starting point.

In terms of colours, the blue represents the sky, the white represents salt and the gold represents the warm sun. The colours are all present on the current flag, so any further symbolism they have can be carried over as well.

The current design

Current flag of New Hampshire

The current flag scored a 3.18/10.00 in NAVA’s North American flag survey, which makes it the tenth worst flag in North America.

My proposal

First off, this design is simple enough to be remembered by a child, yet distinctive enough to be identified at a distance.

This design depicts the “Old Man of the Mountain”, a well-known symbol of New Hampshire, overlooking a starry sky. The dominant circle of nine stars represents how New Hampshire was the ninth addition out of the original states in the US. The form of the stars is inspired by the historic Betsy Ross flag, the flag of New England and the national flag.

By representing the Old Man of the Mountain, New Hampshire’s official nickname “The Granite State” is also accounted for, as the Old Man was composed of granite. The colours are all present on the current flag, so any further symbolism they have can be carried over as well.

Proposed flag of Louisiana

The current design

The current flag scored a 4.98/10.00 in NAVA’s North American flag survey. It could be worse, but it could be better, and I had a great idea I couldn’t wait to try out.

My proposal

First off, this design is simple enough to be remembered by a child, yet distinctive enough to be identified at a distance.

The background layout of this design echoes one of the most recognisable flags in the world, that of France. Louisiana was once a colony of the French Empire and its French legacy and influence is still visible today. The white stripe takes the form of a fleur-de-lis, an old symbol of Royal France that has significance in Louisiana in both historical and modern times. The fleur-de-lis was featured on many flags that flew in that region and is still a popular symbol. For example, it was frequently used as a reminder in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina and was made an official state symbol in 2008. A symbol this widespread and iconic deserves the official recognition of being on the flag.

There are also references to Louisiana’s status as a U.S. state. The colours red, white and blue echo the colours of the national flag. The white star on blue in the canton (top-left corner) echoes the canton of the national flag, in which each white star on blue represents a state.

The blue stands for the sky and sea. The white stands for the coastline and peace. The red stands for the blood that we all share and that has been shed in the past. The colours are all present on the current flag, so any further symbolism they have can be carried over as well. Additionally, blue and white are official state colours.

The current flag scored a 3.17/10.00 in NAVA’s North American flag survey, making it the ninth worst flag in North America.

My proposal

First off, this design is simple enough to be remembered by a child, yet distinctive enough to be identified at a distance.

The overall design reflects the nickname “Gem of the Mountains”. It depicts green mountains, white snowy mountain tops, a clear blue sky and a brilliant golden star. The star depicts both a life-giving sun and a brilliant gem, reflecting the official state nickname “The Gem State”. Apart from a literal depiction of a landscape, the flag also represents the high aspirations and achievements of Idaho. The colours are all present on the current flag, so any further symbolism they have can be carried over as well.

The civil flag of Transnistria is exactly the same as the flag of Russia but longer. The reason was to emphasise closer ties to Russia, but surely there are ways to achieve that without copying the same design! People would find it very difficult to tell them apart. Therefore, here is my proposal.

Гражданский флаг Приднестровья точно такой же, как флаг России, но длиннее. Причина заключалась в том, чтобы подчеркнуть более тесные связи с Россией, но, безусловно, есть способы добиться этого, не копируя тот же дизайн! Людям будет очень трудно отличить их друг от друга. Поэтому вот мое предложение.

First off, this design is simple enough to be remembered by a child, yet distinctive enough to be identified at a distance.

Во-первых, эта конструкция достаточно проста, чтобы ее запомнил ребенок, но достаточно отличительна, чтобы ее можно было определить на расстоянии.

This design features the colours of the Russian flag (the Pan-Slavic colours) to emphasise the closer ties with Russia and achieve the same aims of the current civil flag. Because of this, all colour symbolism in the Russian flag can be applied to this design as well.

В этом дизайне использованы цвета российского флага (панславянские цвета), чтобы подчеркнуть более тесные связи с Россией и достичь тех же целей, что и нынешний гражданский флаг. Благодаря этому вся цветовая символика российского флага может быть применена и к этому дизайну.

The stripes of the flag represents Transnistria’s geography. The Dniester River is the western boundary of Transnistria (the name itself means “beyond the Dniester”) so the leftmost stripe is blue. The white stripe represents the river bank. The big red stripe stands for the nation itself, with the red colour signifying the blood that has been shed for it to exist. The colour of the main stripe, along with the form of the star, echo parts of the current Soviet-inspired flag. This suggests continuity and reflects its history whilst still remaining unique. The white star represents peace and the people of Transnistria, and the circle around it represents unity.

Полосы флага представляют географию Приднестровья. Река Днестр – западная граница Приднестровья (само название означает «за Днестром»), поэтому крайняя левая полоса синего цвета. Белая полоса обозначает берег реки. Большая красная полоса обозначает саму нацию, а красный цвет означает кровь, которая была пролита за ее существование. Цвет основной полосы, наряду с формой звезды, перекликается с частями нынешнего флага в советском стиле. Это предполагает преемственность и отражает его историю, оставаясь при этом уникальным. Белая звезда представляет мир и народ Приднестровья, а круг вокруг нее представляет единство.

The current design

The current flag of the East African Community is far too cluttered and tries to combine too many things into one. There are plans to transform this organisation into a full federation in the near future. When this happens, the region deserves a flag that is more visually appealing, distinct and memorable. Therefore, here is my proposal.

My proposal

First off, this design is simple enough to be remembered by a child, yet distinctive enough to be identified at a distance.

The black represents the people. The gold represents the wealth of the earth and the warmth of the sun. The red represents the blood that we all share and that has been shed in the past. The green represents the natural environment, agriculture and the land. These colours include the Pan-African colours.

The star represents the sun, a bright future and the federation as a whole. The number of points representing the number of founding states [note: There were only five members at the time I made this design]. It is in the canton (top left corner) because that is where the most important parts of a flag should go. When it wears out, the hoist (left hand side) will be the last to remain. When it is not flying, this is the part of the flag that is most visible. When it is flying, the eye will be naturally attracted to that region as a starting point.

The current design / Текущий дизайн

The Union State, the union between Russia and Belarus, has no current flag. Vladimir Putin has recently been pushing hard for tighter integration and if this union becomes more prominent, it will need a flag.

Союзное государство, союз России и Белоруссии, не имеет действующего флага. Владимир Путин в последнее время активно добивается более тесной интеграции, и если этот союз станет более заметным, ему понадобится флаг.

First off, this design is simple enough to be remembered by a child, yet distinctive enough to be identified at a distance.

Во-первых, эта конструкция достаточно проста, чтобы ее запомнил ребенок, но достаточно отличительна, чтобы ее можно было определить на расстоянии.

The overall design is reminiscent of the Soviet flag, suggesting continuity and aiding recognition. The red field represents the blood that we all have in common (suggesting unity) and that has been shed in the past (suggesting a deep history). Red and white are the colours shared between the flags of Belarus and Russia, so these are both present. Red is also a very prestigious colour in the Russian culture.

Общий дизайн напоминает советский флаг, предлагая преемственность и содействие признанию. Красное поле представляет кровь, которую мы все имеем вместе (предполагая единство) и которая была пролита в прошлом (предполагая глубокую историю). Красный и белый цвета являются общими для флагов Беларуси и России, поэтому они присутствуют. Красный также очень престижный цвет в русской культуре.

The individual stars represent the people and progress. The white colour represents the snow, purity and peace, and the gold/yellow colour represents prosperity and vitality.

Отдельные звезды представляют людей и прогресс. Белый цвет представляет снег, чистоту и мир, а золотой / желтый цвет представляет процветание и жизненную силу.

With the current membership, the interpretation is “two stars, two states”. The white star represents Belarus in the west (the name means “White Russia”) and the golden star represents Russia in the east (from the Soviet flag). There is also a more general “two stars, two continents” interpretation, where one star represents Europe and the other represents Asia. Regardless of the interpretation, the red field around the stars links them together, and suggests room and welcome for others.

При нынешнем членстве, интерпретация «две звезды, два состояния». Белая звезда представляет Беларусь на западе (название означает «Белая Россия»), а золотая звезда представляет Россию на востоке (от советского флага). Существует также более общая интерпретация «две звезды, два континента», где одна звезда представляет Европу, а другая – Азию. Независимо от интерпретации, красное поле вокруг звезд связывает их вместе, и предлагает место и приветствие для других.

The two stars are in the canton (top left corner) to ensure importance. This is the most visible part of the flag when flying or at rest. When a flag wears out, this is the last part remaining.

Две звезды находятся в кантоне (верхний левый угол), чтобы обеспечить важность. Это наиболее заметная часть флага во время полета или отдыха. Когда флаг изнашивается, это последняя оставшаяся часть.

Mozambique has already had two official contests to redesign its flag. There are two main problems: The flag features an AK-47 which gives a bad impression of the country and the flag reflects an era of single-party rule which is no longer the situation. Unfortunately, the contests did not produce satisfactory results. Therefore, here is my proposal.

Moçambique já realizou dois concursos oficiais para redesenhar a sua bandeira. Existem dois problemas principais: a bandeira possui um AK-47, que dá uma má impressão do país, e a bandeira reflete uma era de governo de partido único que não é mais a situação. Infelizmente, as competições não produziram resultados satisfatórios. Portanto, aqui está a minha proposta.

First off, this design is simple enough to be remembered by a child, yet distinctive enough to be identified at a distance.

Primeiro, esse design é simples o suficiente para ser lembrado por uma criança, mas distinto o suficiente para ser identificado à distância.

Here are the meanings of each colour:

  • Yellow: The mineral wealth of the country and the sunshine.
  • Blue: The sky and sea.
  • Black: The people, not only those in Mozambique but also in the whole of Africa.
  • Green: The land, agriculture and natural environment.
  • White: Peace and a bright future.
  • Red: The blood that we all share and that has been shed in the past.

Aqui estão os significados de cada cor:

  • Amarelo: A riqueza mineral do país e o sol.
  • Azul: o céu e o mar.
  • Negros: as pessoas, não só as de Moçambique, mas também de toda a África.
  • Verde: a terra, a agricultura e o ambiente natural.
  • Branco: Paz e um futuro brilhante.
  • Vermelho: o sangue que todos nós compartilhamos e que foi derramado no passado.

The colours are all derived from the current flag, with the addition of blue. This means that any further colour symbolism they have can also be carried over. The blue was added so that the colours of both main political parties are represented instead of just one. Also, the layout reflects how the land (green) is to the west of the sea (blue), and the sunshine (yellow) shines down onto the people (black).

As cores são todas derivadas da bandeira atual, com a adição do azul. Isso significa que qualquer outro simbolismo de cor que eles tenham também pode ser transportado. O azul foi adicionado para que as cores dos dois principais partidos políticos sejam representadas em vez de apenas um. Além disso, o layout reflete como a terra (verde) está a oeste do mar (azul), e o sol (amarelo) incide sobre as pessoas (preto).

The sun in general represents warmth, vitality and life. It also represents equality, since the sun shines for everyone, unity, since it is one object, and power, since it contains so much energy. Just like in the coat of arms, it specifically stands for a new beginning for Mozambique; a bright future, positive, optimistic and inevitable. Its ten points represent the ten provinces, with the central circle standing for the capital city (which has provincial status).

O sol em geral representa calor, vitalidade e vida. Representa também igualdade, pois o sol brilha para todos, unidade, por ser um objeto, e poder, por conter muita energia. Tal como o brasão de armas, representa especificamente um novo começo para Moçambique; um futuro brilhante, positivo, otimista e inevitável. Seus dez pontos representam as dez províncias, com o círculo central representando a cidade capital (que tem status de província).

The pattern of rays represents hope for peace (white) to every corner of Mozambique. Lastly, the background has four colours in equal amounts, suggesting that despite the differences of the people in the country, they are all equal in terms of votes (democracy) and the law (justice).

O padrão de raios representa esperança de paz (branco) para todos os cantos de Moçambique. Por fim, o fundo tem quatro cores em quantidades iguais, sugerindo que apesar das diferenças das pessoas no país, todas são iguais em termos de votos (democracia) e de direito (justiça).

The current design / O projeto actual

Critics of the current Angola flag contend that it is too attached to the past (the emblem was intended to echo the Soviet hammer-and-sickle), is stuck in the old era of one-party socialist state and civil war, and gives a bad impression of the country by appearing violent or pessimistic.
Os críticos da atual bandeira de Angola afirmam que ela é muito apegada ao passado (o emblema pretendia ecoar a foice e o martelo soviético), está presa na era antiga do estado socialista e da guerra civil de um partido, e dá uma má impressão do país por parecer violento ou pessimista.

In 2003, the government planned to adopt a more optimistic design to mark the end of the Angolan Civil War, but that proposal was heavily opposed. Critics condemned the proposal as too similar to other countries’ flags (Costa Rica and North Korea), having no relevant meaning, neglecting the country’s history and appearing ugly and primitive (the sun on that design is derived from a crude cave painting). Therefore, here is my proposal.
Em 2003, o governo planejava adotar um design mais otimista para marcar o fim da Guerra Civil Angolana, mas a proposta era fortemente oposta. Os críticos condenaram a proposta como muito semelhante às bandeiras de outros países (Costa Rica e Coréia do Norte), sem significado relevante, negligenciando a história do país e parecendo feia e primitiva (o sol nesse design é derivado de uma pintura de caverna grosseira). Portanto, aqui está a minha proposta.
